IDENTIFICATION OF SOURCES OF RESISTANCE AGAINST CHARCOAL ROT IN COWPEA

چکیده

ABSTRACT Cowpea [Vigna unguiculata (L.) Walp.] is an important socioeconomic crop in Brazil, mainly the Northeast and more recently Midwest of Brazil. Charcoal rot caused by Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid, disease semiarid regions, where edaphoclimatic conditions are favorable to development disease. The aim this study was evaluate response 100 cowpea lines two isolates M. phaseolina. experiments were conducted a completely randomized design, with five replications (two plants per pot). main variables evaluated lesion length relative growth compared control (RGCC). Among accessions, 15% resistant isolate 59 11% CMM 2106 Therefore, these accessions can be used as source resistance farmers directly new cultivars or future hybridizations genetic breeding programs.

Field screening of safflower genotypes for resistance to charcoal rot disease

Nineteen safflower genotypes (Carthamus tinctorius L.) that originated from different geographical regions were screening for their response to infection with Macrophomina phaseolina, the charcoal rot pathogen at the research farm of Gorgan University of Agricultural Sciences and Natural Resources, Gorgan, Iran, in 2005. The plants were evaluated for length and width of necrotic lesion at the e...

Charcoal Rot of Sorghum

Charcoal rot of sorghum causedby the fungus ~acrophorfdna phaseolina is a root andstalk rot disease of great destructive potential in most sorghum-growing regions. Improved, highyielding cultivars under good management tend to be very susceptible to the disease. M. phaseolina is a common soilborne, nonaggressive, and plurivorous pathogen that attacks plants whose vigor has been reduced by unfav...

Influence of Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) on drought tolerance and charcoal rot disease of cowpea

The influence of Arbuscular mycorrhiza fungi (AMF) (Glomus deserticola and Gigaspora gigantea) were evaluated on drought tolerance and charcoal rot disease of cowpea genotypes: IT90K-277-2, IT84S-2246-4 and IT06K123-1. IT90K-277-2 and IT84S-2246-4 were sown in 3 kg of sterilized soil for drought experiment with five treatments. Treatment was established thirty days after germination with inocul...

Anti-mycotic potential of Trichoderma spp. and leaf biomass of Azadirachta indica against the charcoal rot pathogen, Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid in cowpea

Macrophomina phaseolina (Tassi) Goid is a destructive pathogen of cowpea that causes serious charcoal rot disease with significant yield losses. Antifungal activity of three indigenous Ascomycetes viz., Trichoderma harzianum, T. viride, and T. hamatum, and two Meliaceae members, i.e., Melia azedarach L. and Azadirachta indica L. were assessed against the pathogen. Laboratory screening trials wi...

Genetic Architecture of Charcoal Rot (Macrophomina phaseolina) Resistance in Soybean Revealed Using a Diverse Panel

Charcoal rot (CR) disease caused by Macrophomina phaseolina is responsible for significant yield losses in soybean production. Among the methods available for controlling this disease, breeding for resistance is the most promising. Progress in breeding efforts has been slow due to the insufficient information available on the genetic mechanisms related to resistance. Genome-wide association stu...
